J-165 (1854 Bronze Four-Leaf LFE)

Three or four examples of this pattern are purported to exist.  The website of The
Society of US Pattern Collectors states that "Judd says that these are restrikes," which
seems logical, as the only other appearance of this reverse is on the 1855 four-leaf
reverse (J-167 through J-171A).  According to the first edition of the Judd Book (1959),
one specimen resided in the National Numismatic Collection of the Smithsonian
Institution, a second in the Massachusetts Historical Society and a third was
"reported."  According to the third edition of Judd (1965), the third specimen "was in the
[Virgil] Brand collection."  Pollock cites the first two, but not Brand, rather citing Lot
1749 of Sotheby's 1954 King Farouk "Palace Collection."  The Smithsonian  specimen

i
s, in actuality, a J-165B (three leaves under the E in STATES).  I am currently
attempting to confirm the Massachusetts Historical Society
, Brand and Farouk
specimens.  The "coin" pictured above is a composite of the obverse of a J-164 and
the reverse of a J-168.
The Adams and Woodin plate coin for A-W 191 and Judd 1st
plate coin for J-165 are both four-leaf reverses.  The question is whether these are
composites or actual coins.
