Counterfeit Patterns
Counterfeit patterns and splashers are very rare, but they do exist.  Some can be quite
deceptive.  This counterfeit J-1411 was struck using spark erosion dies, where dies
are created using electrical current to etch the coin's design into a die.  Spark erosion
counterfeits generally exhibit very grainy devices, as the electrical current does not
produce a perfect copy.  Other methods of counterfeiting include casting, using
one-to-one transfer dies and electroplating, to name a few.
